The Global Food Crisis :(

I just read an article by John Nichols talking about the world food crisis. A Wisconsin dairy farmer named Jim Goodman was mentioned numerous times. He organizes groups and farm organizations that warn people about this declining problem. He believes that if people would have listened and believed farmers over corporations then they would’ve known about this problem years ago. The food shortages are horrible and due to this many people across the world are starving, malnourished and dying each day. The current global food system is STILL pressuring farmers to produce cash crops for export and alternative fuels rather than grow good healthy food for the local regions. People should also reconize the fact that many biofuels are hurting crop fuels but more importantly harming much livestock because producers can barely afford feed and fertilizer!

I think that we should start following  the principal known as “Food Sovereignty” which helps struggling farmers and many hungry people. I think that we should give our farmers a little more credit because after all, they are the ones that help produce the healthy food for our regional stability and our local consumption.

Tattooing It!

I just read the essay called “Exposing Shallowness”. It was really interesting to me because i wasn’t aware of alot of the information that Theodore Dalrymple was talking about. He emphasized on the relationship between criminals and tattoos. Many criminals who have loved ones express their love threw a needle when they tattoo some kind of symbol or saying reflecting that person. They feel that this would be proof of their unconditional love and devotion to this people despite in the past if they weren’t there or didn’t fufill their duty in the family. But  not only is the tattoo common in the prison atmosphere, its also very common in our modern society. There are different types of tattoos that reflect on certain meanings, morals and expressions.

I think that people choose to get tattoos because it separates them from everybody else and makes them a individual. Tattoos can be empowering, worthy and very personal for some people.  Tattoos are just a great way to express yourself and treasure the special people, things and times that you’ve had in your life by getting it permanently put on your body so everyday you remind yourself by seeing it and treasure the memory or meaning behind it.

The Idea of Local Economy

In this essay Wendell Berry talks alot about our society’s local economy. He suggests that some people could survive just off of our local economy. A category of people like the Amish have been trying to do this for years but i don’t even think they could survive with out going to local grocery store or the hardware store. I live in Shelby and i know the people in this town couldn’t survive on our local economy because in Shelby there isn’t any. Our town is located in a very economically depressed area. After the summer flood there is currently only one grocery store, and their prices are so high that most people go to Meijer or Walmart for their serious weekly groceries. But if you were to live in a city that you could benefit from the local economy like Las Vegas.. i think that you could deffiantly survive.

Jonestown

In my english 110 class we had to do a research paper dealing with spaces or places. I did mine on the Jonestown Massacre. The murder-suicide happend in Guyana, South America in a 300 acre allotment named Jonestown after their leader, Reverend Jim Jones. The estimated 1100 members and their leader were all part of a religious cult named The Peoples Temple.  The Peoples Temple was a church known for the equality of African Americans and shared the belief in racial justice, a need for racial sharing and a need to work to make the world a better place for everyone. Jim Jones preached only that socialism could achieve perfect justice and equality. He ignored communion and baptism and baptized members “in the holly name of socialism”. The Peoples Temple believed that moving to Jonestown and starting a new commune would create the perfect Utopian society. On November 18th, 1978 Jim Jones and his members drank grape flavored Koolaid that was laced with poison. 913 members died, including 277 children under the age of 18

I chose this topic because i wasn’t very knowledgeable about it and i wanted to learn more about it. Through my research i was able to read about cult activities and how their leaders use much manipulation, mind control and brainwashing to become the only authority.  This topic was really interesting to me!
